Picture Book in Progress: A Behind the Scenes Look

If it seems like I've been working on Scruffy Muffin Gets a Job forever, that's because I have! I think I finished writing the story about four years ago, but I didn't start working on the illustrations right away. Then I got busy with the adult books that I write as myself (Michelle Cornish).

But I've been getting back to Scruffy and I thought I'd share this spread from the story as a little sneak peek.

Scruffy Muffin Gets a Job Sneak Peek

Here Scruffy is telling off some birds that were teasing him, and as you can see, that lands him in some trouble! I've finished a third of the illustrations for this book, so I don't have a release date yet, but I'm hoping it will be available by the end of the year.

If you're not familiar with the Scruffy Muffin series, the main character is based on one of our dogs whose real name is Bandit. In book one, Scruffy Muffin Loses His Money, Scruffy learns a tough lesson about what it means to take care of his money.

In Scruffy Muffin Gets a Job, Scruffy realizes he needs more money to buy a toy he wants, so he sets out to find a way to earn some cash. I created this series because I wanted to discuss money with my kids when they were young, but I wanted to do it in a fun way that they'd understand. Of course, it took me so long to write these books that they are much older now!

Hopefully there's still time for Scruffy Muffin and his friends to help other families have open discussions about money. Money and what you do with it (earn, spend, save, donate, etc.), should be something that's not off limits to talk about, as far as I'm concerned! That's why every Scruffy Muffin book has a special section for parents and teachers with discussion ideas.

I'd love to know what kinds of things you do to teach your kids about money. Share them in the comments below!
