Special Guest Post by M.T. Becker with Book Review

Today’s post is by M.T. Becker, the husband and wife author team of Zinger in the Woods.

Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” Albert Einstein

To us, Albert Einstein’s quote is the essence of true education. Human beings have to be able to think for themselves and be able to solve real life problems if we expect them to become productive members of society. And for this to happen, we need an education system that benefits each individual person, not one that benefits educational book publishing companies.

The question is, how can we change the education system from being politically centered to human being centered? One way is to start teaching our children to be intellectual human beings instead of good students. Most children are so caught up in being “good” they never learn how to express themselves.

We, also, need to start teaching our children about their ancestors instead of famous explorers. Think about this, the majority of students know more about Christopher Columbus than they know about their great grandparents. That’s crazy! And, it causes a lack of curriculum connection.

Students who suffer from a lack of curriculum connection lose their self identity. Moreover, a lack of self identity leads to mass conformity. This is why social media platforms use the word “followers,” because human beings have been educated to blindly follow the status quo. Therefore, our education system needs to be reinvented not reformed, and until it is, we will continue to live in a society where students are taught not to think for themselves or care about the people who do!

Zinger in the Woods is a heartwarming story about Olive, a science wiz kid, Ginger, a health conscious hound dog, and Zen, an Australian shepherd who lives alone in the woods has inspired children to solve real world problems, overcome trust issues, and make new friends.

Zinger In The Woods is retold by, husband and wife authors, Mark and Tiesha Becker. The former elementary school teachers decided to write a book after fostering three malnourished puppies. Zinger In the Woods reflects the lessons they learned from being parents, doggie parents, and teachers for over thirty years.

HERE’S MY REVIEW . . .

Zinger in the Woods is a great beginning chapter book that feels like an expanded picture book. The book is 24 pages (seven chapters) with approximately one illustration per chapter. This makes it a great book for children who are transitioning from early readers to chapter books, especially if they’re like my kids and see a “fat” book then turn away.

As someone who is health conscious and interested in natural remedies, I loved the mention of the healing benefits of plants like peppermint leaves and lavender flowers. This tied into a lesson my younger son has been working on in school as well, so it was perfect. A heart warming story about friendship, determination, and happy endings.
