As you may know, I’ve been working on the fourth book in the Halloway Hills Middle School Mysteries series, Eavesdropping on Easter. While writing is underway, I’ve also been busy with another important part of the book—the cover design!
If you’ve been following the series, you’ll know that each book’s cover follows a similar concept: a bold, playful design that reflects the mystery at hand and appeals to young readers. *Eavesdropping on Easter* is no different, but this time there’s a twist! In addition to maintaining the same style and feel of the previous covers, there are two key elements that will make this cover stand out from the rest.
Two Cats, Two Personalities
First, Eavesdropping on Easter introduces two cats, Ginger and Ghost, rather than just one. This is the first time in the series that we’ll have two furry sidekicks, each with their own personality—Ginger is Becky’s playful orange kitten, and Ghost, her brother’s cat, is the more curious and quiet white one. Both cats play a big role in the mystery, so they absolutely need to be on the cover!
The challenge is capturing the distinct personalities of both cats while keeping the cover simple and cohesive with the others in the series. I’m exploring ideas of how to visually represent Ginger’s energy and Ghost’s quiet curiosity. Should Ginger be in mid-pounce, or should she be chasing something? And what about Ghost? Maybe she’ll be peeking out from behind something or watching the scene unfold with those piercing amber eyes of hers.
An Easter Setting
The second element is, of course, the Easter theme. Easter plays a central role in the mystery this time, and I want to make sure the cover reflects the holiday’s fun and colorful atmosphere. Think pastel colors, Easter eggs hidden in plain sight, and maybe even a playful nod to the town’s famous egg hunt.
While brainstorming, I’ve been thinking about incorporating Easter baskets, eggs, or springtime flowers into the cover design, perhaps as part of the background. These details will not only make the cover visually appealing but also give readers a hint of the mystery to come.
Keeping the Series Consistent
As much as I want to add these new elements, I also need to keep the cover in line with the rest of the series. The previous Halloway Hills covers all share a similar layout and vibe, so Eavesdropping on Easter will need to match that look and feel. Bright colors, fun fonts, and a touch of mystery are staples of the series’ covers, and I want to make sure this one fits right in.
Designing covers is such an exciting process for me. I love seeing the cover take shape from initial sketches to the final product. I can’t wait to share it with you all once it’s finished!
As always, thank you for your support and excitement for this series. I’m having so much fun creating this new story, and I can’t wait for you to join Becky, her brother, and their cats on another adventure in Halloway Hills.
