Exciting and Hilarious: A Review of The Bad Guys Series by Aaron Blabey

The Bad Guys series by Aaron Blabey was recommended to me by a used bookstore owner. It was one of the few new books she carried and I told her that my kids weren't really into reading. At the time, they were about 6 and 8. They're now 12 and 14 and still thing The Bad Guys books are hilarious.

The series is an absolute delight for readers of all ages. It's a refreshing and humorous take on the classic "bad guy" trope, following a ragtag team of supposed villains trying to reform their ways. Mr. Wolf, Mr. Shark, Mr. Piranha, and Mr. Snake make for a hilarious ensemble, with each character bringing unique quirks and comedic flair to the group. Their well-intentioned but often misguided attempts to change their reputation are both heartwarming and riotously funny.

Blabey's writing shines through with wit, snappy dialogue, and smart humor that keeps both kids and adults chuckling from start to finish. The illustrations are dynamic, brimming with energy and expression, which perfectly complement the fast-paced storytelling. These books are perfect for reluctant readers because the pages aren't text heavy all with the text fitting into the illustrations. They are almost like graphic novels (in black and white) for young readers. Each book is packed with thrilling adventures, unexpected twists, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

The series provides a subtle yet impactful message about teamwork, embracing diversity, and the power of second chances. It engages readers in an important conversation about identity and acceptance without being preachy. The ongoing narrative across multiple books ensures that readers are always eager to dive into the next chapter of this endlessly entertaining journey.

The Bad Guys series is a fantastic choice for readers who love action-packed stories with a side of good humor. Aaron Blabey has created a world that's both captivating and relatable, making these books an absolute must-read. Whether you're a kid or just a kid at heart, you'll find yourself rooting for these "bad guys" as they strive to do good.
